The Center for the Development of Recycling (CDR) is a university-based service-learning organization that researches, advocates, and works to close open loops of consumption while preparing college students for careers as environmental professionals. Established in 1989, CDR operates with a part-time Director; three paid part-time students and several students who enroll for academic credit. CDR has been recognized with several service-learning awards from SJSU, the California Resource Recovery Association, and the Chancellor of the California State University (CSU). CDR’s faculty-managed students populate and operate the official recycling website https://www.recyclestuff.org/ for the 36 cities and 2.6 million residents of the counties of Santa Clara (SCC) and San Mateo (SMC), and the Household Hazardous Waste and Recycling/Reuse Call Center for SCC. 100's of students have used their SJSU/CDR service-learning experience to earn internships and careers with government, industry, and non-profits.
